CHKC Roger Carter Mechanical - Ark at the Park

The Circular Head Kart Club Roger Carter Mechanical - Ark at the Park was held at the Briant Park Kart Racing complex in Smithton on Saturday with just over 60 karters entered for the day.

Racing started at 1:00pm with the chief steward declaring the track wet.  In typical Smithton fashion we had all four seasons in one day.  This made for a very interesting start especially for the rookies and cadet classes.  It wasn’t long before the track was declared dry which meant a quick change of tyres especially for those classes already waiting on the out grid.

With those classes that had a light and heavy class racing together, this made for good racing when the faster heavies caught up with lights in the slippery conditions.  The racing went smoothly all afternoon and after a tea break the finals were held under lights.

Although every class was well represented, the class with the most competitors was Sportsman with nineteen karters on the track for the first heat.  They took a while to grid up for their start, with several roll up laps before getting the green light.  With so many karters on the track this made for a very competitive but clean race.  From heat two onwards they were separated into two classes with the lights racing on their own and the heavy and super heavy combining for an exciting final.

Hard luck story of the day was for Launceston’s Troy Stone who was leading the Sportsman heavy pre-final when he had a major collision with a kart re entering the track after a spin. Troy’s kart needed a major rebuild with both front and rear badly damaged and it was a credit to all those competitors who pitched in and helped Troy rebuild in time to compete in the finals.

The next race meeting for the Circular Head Kart Club will be on the 8 August with another twilight meeting.  This track is unique in Tasmania as the only place where you can have the experience of racing under lights.
